The Code of Conduct is a condition of membership for all swimmers, parents and coaches.  All members of the Piranha Swim Team and their parents agree to abide by the Code of Conduct and agree to be subjected to the consequences of violating the Code.

All enforcement decisions made by the Darien YMCA are final and are not subject to review. No refunds will be granted to those swimmers dismissed from the team for their or their parents’ violation of the Code of Conduct.

Roles And Responsibilities

Parents-
  1. Teach and practice good sportsmanship at all meets and practices. You are role models!
  2. Respect the sport.  Respect the officials. Respect the coaches.  Respect other parents, who often serve as volunteers.
  3. Do not coach your child. Let swimmers swim and coaches coach, and support both positively.
  4. NEVER criticize other swimmers, coaches or officials regardless of the circumstances.
  5. Follow the “24 Hour Rule”.  If you have a complaint resulting from a meet (or practice) situation, speak with the coach on the following day.
  6. Notify the Head Referee or the Meet Manager if there is a serious problem at a meet.
  7. Emphasize the FUN of the sport and the benefits of training, competing and putting forth effort at all times.  Do not emphasize winning or beating another swimmer.
  8. Time at least twice during the season.

All-
  1. Any conduct, including abusive language and/or gestures, racially insensitive remarks, damage
to property or belongings, or any other conduct that reflects poorly on you, the Darien YMCA,
and/or the Piranhas is deemed to be unacceptable and will not be tolerated. This rule applies to
all swimmers, parents, siblings and guests at all times when at meets and/or practices, on the
pool deck, in the locker rooms or any other associated facilities.
  2. You represent the Piranhas and the Darien YMCA during any meet or practice, home or away.
Any conduct such as shoplifting, destruction of property, illegal consumption of drugs or alcohol,
or any other questionable activity will not be tolerated. This rule applies for the entire duration
    of such meet or practice.
  3. The Piranha coaching staff and the Executive Director of the Darien YMCA will deal with
unacceptable conduct at their sole discretion, imposing warnings, suspension or expulsion,
as they deem appropriate.  ANY SUSPENSION OR EXPULSION FROM THE TEAM BASED ON
VIOLATIONS OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT WILL NOT BE ACCOMPANIED BY ANY REFUNDS.

Fees

The Piranha competitive swim program is affiliated with both the National YMCA and United States Swimming (USA Swimming). Our Local Swimming Committee is Connecticut Swimming, Inc. (CSI). The fees indicated for our program are reflective of the Club’s participation in both programs and are required of all participants.

YMCA Membership
The Y membership fees are used for covering the actual YMCA facility expenses. All Team participants are required to have a full Child YMCA membership (vs ‘Member-kid’ membership which is granted free of charge when a parent joins the YMCA) and are eligible to participate in YMCA Dual meets, YMCA State Championships and YMCA Nationals. House Swimmers who are full child members of the Y will also be entitled to compete in YMCA dual meets.

PPA Dues
PPA dues cover an wide array of important Team expenses not covered by training fees.   Included are funds for Team spirit building social events (eg holiday parties, age group socials, post-practice feasts on the lawn), subsidy for our annual banquet, Team banner,  and Team T-shirts for championships. Also covered are the costs of registering and purchasing uniforms for our Team’s volunteer officials, website support and funds to subsidize swimmer’s costs for travel meets.  PPA Dues are determined during the PPA annual budget process, must be paid in full at registration and are non-refundable.

USA Swimming Fees
United States Swimming is the national governing body for swimming in the United States. The Piranha Swim Club is a member of USA Swimming through the Local Swimming Committee (LSC) of Connecticut Swimming Inc. The Piranha Swim Team participates in USA Swimming sanctioned meets throughout the course of the year. These meets are in addition to the YMCA dual and championship meets. Every Piranha swimmer is required to register with USA Swimming, in order to participate in these meets, as well as be insured while participating in practices and meets. The membership is effective from the September registration date.

Meet Fees
All swimmers are required to pay an amount specified in the fee schedule for meet fees.  An account is maintained for each family to cover the entry fees charged by USA swimming for each event a swimmer is entered in.

In preparation for every meet, Piranha management forwards a check to the hosting Team of each meet, with our Team Entry to cover meet fees for the whole Team.  ($4-$8 per event).  Payment is made to the host team on each swimmer’s behalf, regardless of whether they actually compete or not.  These checks are often for several thousands of dollars.

Swimmers are entered based on check-off lists posted on the Team bulletin board in the YMCA lobby prior to each meet. Depending on the number of meets and events a swimmer enters, their meet fee account may diminish quickly or slowly.   Mid-season invoices will be sent to all families whose meet account balance is low.   No account will be permitted to go into arrears.   Swimmers attending championship meets may be required to make an additional meet fee deposit at the beginning of the championship season.   Payment is due in full upon receipt of any meet fee invoice.

For Team registration, an estimate is made of meet fee charges that each individual swimmer will incur over the course of the season.  The estimated amount must be paid in full at the time of registration.  Individual swimmer meet fee account balances are managed in the Piranha office.  Invoices for additional deposits mid-season, if needed, will be forwarded to individual swimmers.  Meet fee accounts will not be permitted to go into arrears.

If at any time you have questions regarding a balance or meet charges, contact the Piranha Administrator at the YMCA 203-655-8228, ext 329.

Insurance Statement
The Darien YMCA does not provide accident insurance for injuries sustained during YMCA activities. Participants in programs use the facility at their own risk. Members are encouraged to have personal medical insurance coverage.

Fundraising

piranha_fundraising
Each Piranha family is required to participate in the Team’s fundraisers.  Every other year, the Team runs a Swim Challenge, a large effort swim-a-thon for which all Piranhas are obliged to collect pledges at minimum levels.   The minimum required level of financial participation will be determined by the PAC during its annual budgeting process.  On alternate years, the PAC will determine if a smaller fundraiser is required to meet their goals in support of the Team.  Fundraiser participation is a requirement of Team membership. Any requests for variation on your payment must be approved by the Head Coach before registration. Any swimmer in arrears of fundraising requirements will not be permitted to practice until account is settled.
Money raised from fundraisers fund guest speakers, Team items such as tents for summer meets, Team banners, much needed computer software for the coaching staff, timing equipment and allows the coaches to attend travel meets and clinics.

2011 Commitment
As stated in your registration information you were given at the beginning of the swimming year, the commitment for each family is detailed in the packet cover letter.  Any family who fails to raise the minimum amount will have the amount deducted from their meet fee account.

Stroke Clinics

piranha_stroke_cli

Spring 2014 Stroke Evaluation Clinic – April 7th – 10th

The Spring Stroke Clinic is offered to swimmers 7 years and up (swimmers aging up to 7 by the end of the year can participate).  All new swimmers including winter-only 2013-2014 Piranhas who did not register for Long Course 2014 or Fall or Winter House must attend the Spring Stroke Clinic to be considered for membership on the Team.  Any returning Fall or Winter 2013-14 House swimmer who wishes to remain in House for the Spring does not have to participate in the Spring Clinic.  Registration for Stroke Clinic may be done online or in-person at the Y by following the YMCA’s Spring 2014 Registration Schedule.  Returning full year Piranhas or seasonal Piranhas who participated in Fall or Winter House are not required to attend the Spring Stroke Clinic.

All new swimmers including House swimmers must attend the Spring Stroke Clinic to be evaluated for Team. Fall and Winter House swimmers do not have to be evaluated for Spring House.  Each swimmer considering the stroke clinic should be able to swim at least three of the following strokes:  freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, as well as be able to dive into the pool. During the clinic coaches will teach drills for all four competitive strokes, analyze technique and work towards correcting technical flaws.  New swimmers will be evaluated and some will be invited to join the Piranhas or House Swimming.  It is important for all swimmers to attend all four days of stroke clinic.  If you have conflicts please inform the coaches.  New swimmers who attend the stroke clinic are not guaranteed placement on the Team or House.  We have limited space on both and some kids will be put on a wait list or referred to lessons in an effort to keep kids in the pool.  Parents and swimmers will be notified via email about placement no later than one day after the completion of the clinic (see Y session brochure or clinic letter for detailed date and time).  Emails will contain all the necessary information about registration, start dates, suit fitting, etc.

Counselor In Training

CIT

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING PROGRAM
(C.I.T.)

Our Counselor In Training program is a great step for 8th, 9th and 10th graders to learn what it takes to be a Camp Counselor.

The goal of the C.I.T. Program is to find participants that have a true desire to work with children. It is our goal to teach you through hands on experience the aspects of working with children at camp. This will include planning and implementing activities, organization of campers, discipline and at times parent interaction.

Each C.I.T. will be assigned a group each session. They will work with the counselors of their group with all the day to day operations of camp and will participate in all activities.   The C.I.T. Coordinator will ask the counselors to evaluate the C.I.T. that was assigned to their group and I will use those evaluations when hiring C.I.T.’s to be paid staff members in the future.

Returning CITs may register during regular registration times.  No application is needed.

New CIT’s must fill out the CIT Application and return it to Suzanne Richards by March 1, 2015.  Once applications are received, applicants will be contact by the CIT Coordinator in March to set up a short interview.  You will then receive a Welcome Letter and payment information.

Click here to download the C.I.T. application.
